Decoy

The other day I was in the bathroom, and Chloe was in the living room playing with her train set. I heard silence, followed by some rustling, and then...

Chloe: ah ah ah (another way of saying no she picked up from our disciplining the dog)

Me: Chloe, whatever you are doing, stop. Come show mama.

Chloe: ah ah ah

(more paper rustling)

Chloe: SOFT!

(bang bang bang of little feet - because this toddler doesn't pitter patter)

Chloe: MAMA! SOFT!

And there she stood proudly holding up her new vest from Hanna Andersson that had been wrapped under the Christmas tree. She was so excited! Up until then, she had shown little interest in the tree, and no interest in the pretty boxed underneath it. Since she figured out there are things inside the boxes, she has been constantly trying to sneak them.

Two days ago, I sat down to eat my lunch. She grabbed a roll of toilet paper and then walked with it behind the couch, watching me with every step she took. I said, "Have fun, Chloe, I'm watching." A few minutes later, I heard that telltale paper rustling, and looked behind the couch. Sure enough she was there opening another gift. That one wasn't even for her. I found it rather amusing that she chose a roll of toilet paper as a decoy.

Next year, no gifts under the tree until Christmas morning!
